‘No proof Mashitah committed offence over ‘burning Qurans’ claim’

The Attorney-General’s Chambers had found no evidence that a Wanita Umno leader who accused the Chinese of burning Qurans in 2014 had committed an offence, said law minister Nancy Shukri.

“The AG’s Chambers had studied the investigation papers in the Mashitah Ibrahim case and found no evidence that proves she did any wrongdoing,” Nancy said.

She said this in a written parliamentary reply to Gooi Hsiao Leung (PKR-Alor Setar) who asked why no action has yet been taken against Mashitah.

Mashitah, who is a senator and former deputy minister, had claimed during the 2014 Umno general assembly that there were Chinese people in Kedah burning copies of the Quran, page-by-page.

She said this was an example of how the Malays and Islam were being challenged in Malaysia.

It was later established that her allegation was not true.

Gooi said he was appalled by Nancy’s reply, saying it was “incredible” that the AG’s Chambers found no evidence despite Mashitah’s speech at the Umno AGM being widely reported, including videos of it.

“Clearly by their actions, the authorities are protecting Mashitah by whitewashing her case and letting her off the hook completely,” Gooi said in a statement today.

He urged Nancy to get the AG’s Chambers to review the case so the Wanita Umno leader can be held accountable for her speech.
