'Were 1MDB and RM2.6b issues measured in syariah index?'

An MP is asking whether the 75 percent syariah compliance score obtained by the government in the 2015 Syariah Index Report includes assessments of abuse of power and corruption.

Amanah’s Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa also questioned whether the RM2.6 billion political donation said to be made to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and 1MDB scandal were also part of the measure.

“I worry that this (index) and the good name of syariah will be used to mislead Malays and Muslims.

“I urge the Syariah Index committee and chairperson to reveal how the score was achieved when the government is facing a crisis of confidence,” Mujahid said in a statement.

He said the objectives of the syariah are not met in the 1MDB and RM2.6 billion cases, with poor transparency and failure to duly report transactions.

Neither are they met when wastages and corruption are annually reported in the Auditor-General’s Report, he said.

“The impacts on the economy, welfare, investment and financial system have cast doubts on the government’s integrity.

“Do they meet syariah’s objectives in protecting public property?” Mujahid asked.

Among categories measured in the syariah index include economy, politics, public health and education.

The report, released yesterday, was the first ever to be released after the syariah index was announced in February 2015.
