Groups to launch media solidarity campaign amid crackdown

Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm) in collaboration with the Institute of Journalists (IoJ) is set to launch its "Solidarity Media for Media" campaign tomorrow in light of recent developments that have affected the industry.

"The campaign objectives are two-fold - to raise public awareness that independent media in Malaysia cannot exist without their support, and to call on all facets of the Malaysian media to stand united for the sake of the profession," Geramm said in a statement today.

The campaign will run over three days with campaign partners blasting its message at 9pm through Twitter and Facebook .

The message will come with a link to an interactive timeline that highlights briefs on the various clampdowns on the media in the country from 1961 to 2016.

To support the campaign, journalists and supporters are encouraged to share the Timeline with the following message - 'There is a price to be paid for free press' and #freethepress on their social media feeds.

Geramm added that it is also collaborating with the IoJ and Foreign Correspondents Club of Malaysia (FCCM) to launch a job repository listing on April 1.

"The job repository - which will be hosted on FCCM's website - will list out job openings in media and related industries, in efforts to help journalists and media workers laid off with the closure or restructuring of various news organisations in recent years," it said.

This is the second solidarity campaign by Geramm after highlighting the non-payment of salaries by Bernama TV and state-owned broadcaster RTM in March last year.

"This renewed campaign was mooted after the closure of two news portals, The Malaysian Insider (TMI) and The Rakyat Post , adding to the long list of other news organisations such as ABN News , mytourismtv , mobtv and theantdaily , which have had to close down or restructure due to financial uncertainty or corporate decisions," it said.

TMI was shut down on March 14 after it was unable to seek out funders following the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) move to block the website over its report about Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and the multi-billion deposits in his personal bank accounts.

Prior to that, MCMC had also blocked several other news portal, international and local, including The Malaysian Chronicles, Sarawak Report and Asia Sentinel over reports critical of Najib.

The government is also planning to tighten its grip on the online media with new regulatory frameworks.

"The campaign, as such, also raises concerns over the recent plan by the communications and multimedia ministry to compel news portals and blogs to register with the government, under proposed amendments to the MCMC Act.

"The planned amendments also appear to be an attempt by the federal government to extend archaic restrictions on online media.

"The campaign calls on the ministry to put their planned amendments on hold and organise a meeting with online media stakeholders," said Geramm.
