Bersih, NGOs team up to monitor five seats in S'wak polls
Electoral reform group Bersih and Sarawak-based NGOs have formed election observer teams to monitor five state constituencies in the upcoming state polls.
Bersih in a statement today said the seats are Tasik Biru, Batu Kitang, Bawang Assan, Senadin and Telang Usan.
"The constituencies were chosen because they are marginal seats and have a high risk of electoral wrongdoing," it said.
Bersih said preparations for the observation works had begun since January and the coalition has trained more than 50 observers in Sarawak.
It also called on more Sarawakians, particularly those living in the five constituencies, to volunteer as observers.
Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem had last week announced that the state legislative assembly will be dissolved on April 11 to pave the way for state election.
A total of 82 state constituencies will be contested in the election.
Bersih said the election observation work was important to ensure that the Sarawak polls was clean and fair.
"Through observation, the people can be witnesses to deter and report electoral cheating or wrongdoing, abuse of power and disruption to the electoral process.
"Reports and evidence received are also important for legal action and election petition, if needed," it said.
Bersih said Sarawakians who are interested in volunteering as observers could do so at its website at www.bersih.org/pemantausarawak, contact its headquarters at 03-79314444/019-4380428 or e-mail at [email protected]
