Argentina's president implicated in Panama Papers affair

Investigators in Argentina said yesterday they want to open a probe of President Mauricio Macri in connection with data leaked from a law firm based in Panama.

Prosecutor Federico Delgado asked for the investigation of Macri, whose name allegedly appears as the director of an offshore company in the Panama Papers.

Delgado said he wanted to investigate Macri for alleged willful omission of information in his tax returns, a statement from Delgado's office said. A judge must decide whether to allow the investigation to go forward.

A member of the opposition also filed a complaint on the matter with the prosecutor.

Macri said the information had not been included in his tax return because he was not a shareholder of the company at any time.

The data - millions of documents leaked by an employee of the law firm and released to the public on Sunday - already has led to the resignation of Iceland's premier. Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson stepped down yesterday after he and his wife were implicated in the massive data leak. They have denied any wrongdoing.

Reports about the data leak have detailed how wealthy people funnelled their money to shell companies in tax havens, calling into question the finances of numerous politicians, sports stars and celebrities from about 80 countries.
