Why not make AG head of the judiciary as well?
YOURSAY | ‘AG is a political appointee and does not automatically qualify for this honour.’
B N rep moots proposal to make AG head of Bar Council
Mojo Jojo:
Of all the stupidity I've heard thus far, this has got to be the dumbest.
Which part of top prosecutor becoming leader of defence lawyers sounds right to you? Ever heard of conflict of interest?
If the attorney-general can become Bar president, why not make him ruler of the three realms and make him chief justice as well?
While we're at it, let’s make the prime minister speaker of the lower house of Parliament and install him president of the senate as well.
Even better, why not create a ministry of shop-till-you-drop so that someone's spouse can ravage through high-end stores and claim to be on government business while ringing up receipts to the tune of millions?
Idiocy just doesn't quite describe this.
Notsoshiningarmour: This certainly looks like the work of some desperate hoodlums who sit on the wrong side of the law in a frantic act to cover up all their criminal deeds and halt the quest for truth and justice.
Imagine the AG debarring lawyers at his whims and fancy, just like the arrest of Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli for exposing the fact that members of parliament from BN were telling lies in Parliament by denying his allegations until he had to reveal it by producing the documents, and who still continued to lie, and after he threatened to reveal more, he was arrested at the doorsteps of the Parliament.
How much more indecent could the police department be? Are there any measures to take the PM and MPs to task for lying in Parliament?
Roy69: In the first place, the Bar is not political as it does not have its representatives in Parliament.
Second, the Bar is not interfering with the AG's job but merely questioning why the AG was not exercising his discretion judiciously.
Third, the majority of lawyers in Malaysia are Malays and no one has stopped them from rising up the ranks of the Bar. Hence this need for a racial quota is nonsensical.
I don't agree with the Bar on many of its stance but that does not mean one removes its independence. This is what we call check and balance. Where do these Umno people come from?
Hearty Malaysian: So once again, it is the race that counts. Only a Malay can become Bar Council chairperson, according to Tanjong Karang MP Nor Omar's proposal.
It is time we get rid of this neo-Nazi mentality in Umno. Unless the silent majority of Malays stand up and say no, this country will go down the drain, especially if people like Nor Omar get their way.
Gaji Buta: I don't understand why people keep referring to a 'silent majority' in the Malay community. Time and again, it has been proven that they are as real as the unicorn.
They only grumble and complain in the coffee shops, but when it comes to the crunch, you know where their loyalty is.
It is same as one complaining about their children to close friends. It doesn't mean they will throw their kids away.
Anonymous_4056: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri, it is a brilliant idea making AG the head of Bar Council.
Please suggest that the AG be made the head of judiciary, too. Why not? After all, we have an exemplary AG.
CHKS: How is challenging the AG’s decision tantamount to the Bar Council being politically motivated when the AG himself is not a politician?
In fact, it is precisely because Bar Council wants to be free and professional that they are criticising the AG's decision.
P Dev Anand Pillai: If this proposed amendments ever sees the light of day, that will be the end of the Malaysian Bar and all its efforts before and after independence thus far for the advancement of justice and human rights.
The legal profession will take a step backward. The independence of the judiciary was taken away in 1988 and now after 28 years, they are trying to do the same with the Bar. What say you, members of the Bar?
Patriot1: Indeed, this is utter nonsense. The Bar Council represents the legal profession in Malaysia. The president is one who is elected by the Bar members on merit and the post is held in the highest regards by the legal profession.
The post of Bar Council chairperson is voted by the members themselves where race and gender don’t matter.
It is not a government institution and there is absolutely no room for racial quotas as practised by the government at all levels.
Mushiro: Does de facto law minister Nancy know what she is talking about?
Let the Bar Council be independent. And if the AG wants to head the Bar Council, let him stand for election.
Beep!: If the lawyers of this country do not march in force against this crazy proposal of Nasrun, then they deserve to be led by the nose by the AG.
