Former Perlis mufti Juanda Jaya named as S'wak BN candidate

Former Perlis mufti Juanda Jaya has been named by Chief Minister Adenan Satem as one of the candidates to be fielded by Sarawak BN in the coming state election.

Juanda who was once an Oxford University fellow, was announced as a candidate along with 10 others at an event in Kuching today.

He is to contest for BN in the Jemoreng state seat.

Jemoreng is a village in Matu District, Sarawak mostly populated by the the Melanau community.

The major economic activity for the settlement is agriculture, mostly comprising of vegetables, fruits and upland rice cultivation, as well as the rearing of cows, ducks and chickens.

The seat is held by Abu Seman Jahwie, political secretary to the Sarawak chief minister, though he was not nominated this year because of health reasons.

In 2011, Abu Seman garnered 4,505 votes defeating Independents Abdul Hafiz Noh (1,579 votes) and Asbor Abdullah (77 votes). Jemoreng has a total of 8,635 registered voters.

A Melanau, Juanda was born in Sibu and was the Perlis mufti from 2009 for two years.

Previously Juanda was touted to have been named to contest for the Kangar state seat for opposition party PKR in GE13, but it never came to pass.

Seven other candidates from PBB are:

- Idris Buang (Muara Tuang)

- Awla Dris (Simunjan)

- Shafiee Ahmad (Daro)

- Mohd Chee Kadir (Kabong)

- Jefferson Jamit Unyat (Bukit Goram)

- Abdul Wahab Aziz (Kalaka)

- Ambrose Blikau (Katibas)

The Kabong and Bukit Goram state seats are two of the 11 new seats which will be contested for the first time in the upcoming state polls.

Three others are direct BN candidates, Miro Simuh (Serembu), John Ilus (Bukit Semuja) and Gerawat Jala (Mulu).

Adenan, who is also Sarawak BN chief and PBB president, reportedly said that thus far, all 40 BN candidates from PBB have already been announced.
