Tunku Ismail challenges Khairy to debate on football

Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has challenged Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to a televised debate on the performance of the national footballers.

In a late night Facebook posting, the crown prince said he was tired and sick with all the lies and cover-ups related to the performance of the national footballers.

While agreeing that the footballers lacked in quality, Tunku Ismail argued that the system in the football associations and the training by the coaches should be blamed.

"My argument is that we should not come out with a statement blaming the players. On the contrary, we big people in football clubs, associations and coaches should take responsibility and say that it's our fault.

"That is called taking responsibility, and not just running away, blaming players, FAM, football associations and clubs," he added.

"Why am I doing this? I'm doing this because I'm sick and tired of the lies and cover-up. As the people's prince, the people's voices must be heard and their voices are my priority," he said.

"So, this is a challenge from me. I'm not a politician and I don't need votes. I have no intention of being Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president and as I have said before, football is not my bread and butter.

"I urge Astro to put YB Khairy, a representative from FAM, Ong Kim Swee, Lim Teong Kim, Sathia and myself on live television to talk about who's responsible for the poor performance of our national team and Malaysian football and what courses of action to take.

"Also in this programme, they should allow the fans to voice out their opinions and ask any questions they want," he said.

On Sunday, the crown prince slammed Khairy for claiming local footballers lacked in quality to perform on the international stage, after Malaysia's Fifa ranking fell to an all-time low of 174 last week.

"I'm surprised that FAM and other affiliates are not interested to fix the problem by having a meeting when we already know what the problem is," the crown prince said last night.

He claimed that he only wanted to be transparent and honest about the actual problems of Malaysian football.

"That's why in my statement I said no one really cares about Malaysian football except for me. Whether you like it or not I will continue to fight against any corrupted regime.

"You should stand together and demand changes. You can't change something when you don't know what's the problem," he said further.

"That's why I say the best way is to put me on live television so the whole country can know what is the actual problem. Enough with the cover-up. Be transparent," Tunku Ismail stressed.
