The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) formed an investigation team for the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) last Friday to scrutinise the report of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

According to Bernama , inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the investigation team, headed by him, would investigate the government's strategic investment company under Section 409 of the Penal Code and Section 420 of the same code if any element of breach of trust or fraud was found.

"I have received instruction from the cabinet following its meeting in Parliament on April 8 for the PDRM to carry out an investigation.

"The police have restarted investigation by taking into account five recommendations from the PAC report and to look at all issues raised in the report," he told a media conference in conjunction with the blood donation programme for the 209th Police Day Memorial today.

Khalid said several witnesses including the former 1MDB chief executive officer, Shahrul Azral Ibrahim Halmi, were also called to assist in the investigation, besides carrying out checks on documents concerning the 1MDB case.

"Whatever the outcome, we will present it to the Attorney-General's Chambers," said Khalid.

He said he would look to see whether there were any elements of crime or whether they were merely breaching the corporate ethics under the Companies Act.

The PAC last Thursday tabled the 106-page Report of the 1MDB Governance Management Control at the Dewan Rakyat.

The committee, which consists government Members of Parliament as well as the opposition, among others recommended that the authorities investigated the former 1MDB chief executive and the parties linked to the management of the government-owned strategic investment company.

Other members of the police investigating team are officers from the Commercial Criminal Investigation Department (CCID) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

In a separate press conference held at Sasana Kijang, Kuala Lumpur later, Khalid was asked on how he would build public confidence that the police will be doing a fair job in the case.

“I won't elaborate (on) what I'm going to do one by one but I'll carry out my duties as what I'm required,” he said.

He also confirmed that police have gone through the 106-page PAC report and had identified issues raised in the report.

“We will continue the investigations which we have opened previously,” he said.

He also did not elaborate on whether Shahrol is currently under a travel ban or whether his assets have been frozen or otherwise.

“The investigation is ongoing, so I won't elaborate (on) what we are going to do. Let us carry out our work in conducting the investigation,” he said.

Khalid also said that he did not give any time limit to his officers to carry out the investigation but affirmed that it will be done thoroughly.
