Do you love or hate me, Arul Kanda asks Pua

Since taking over the helm of 1MDB last January, Arul Kanda Kandasamy has been the subject of relentless criticism and allegations, especially from Tony Pua.

However, the banker, who was roped in from the Middle East to reverse the ailing state investment firm's fortunes, believes that the DAP lawmaker is confused about his feelings towards him.

"On Thursday morning, he said I should resign from 1MDB. On Thursday night, he asked to debate with me.

"It is clear that Pua is confused and contradicts himself. He does not know if he loves me or hates me," Arul Kanda added in a media statement.

The 1MDB president and executive director was responding to Pua's challenge yesterday to engage in a debate, which Arul Kanda has accepted .

"He says I should resign, then says I need to stay on and debate with him. This is despite many in DAP, including Pua, calling me a liar, who is not worth listening to.

"So why debate when you will not listen to, or believe, anything I say?" Arul Kanda asked.

Last week, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) tabled its report on 1MDB in Parliament.

Despite the report requiring a unanimous consent prior to being tabled, Pua, who is a PAC member, said he was only 80 percent satisfied with the outcome.

On Wednesday, Pua urged the authorities to investigate Arul Kanda for allegedly covering up the 1MDB-IPIC-Aabar scam.

While agreeing that the transfer totalling US$3.51 billion to British Virgin Islands-incorporated Aabar Investment PJS (Aabar BVI) took place before Arul Kanda took over the reins, the DAP MP claimed the 1MDB boss was fully aware of the fake Aabar BVI.

However, Arul Kanda denied the accusation and urged Pua to furnish evidence.

The acrimonious relationship between 1MDB and the opposition MP has seen the pair trading barbs and allegations.
