Kini Roundup: PM’s aide snipes Dr M, diverted 1MDB funds mystify

Here’s a recap of major headlines yesterday you may have missed.

'If not Mukhriz, who will be new PM?'

Prime Minister's aide Tengku Sariffudin Tengku Ahmad is taking an increasingly active role in hitting out at his boss' opponents, training his guns on both former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his son Mukhriz Mahathir.

Just as Mukhriz dismissed speculation that his father is trying to make him prime minister, Tengku Sariffudin demanded that Mahathir name who the new prime minister would be if not his own son, should Najib step down.

Silence over beneficiary of diverted 1MDB funds

Finance Ministry deputy minister Johari Abdul Ghani said Putrajaya did not pay the US$50 million in interest owed by 1MDB and does not plan to intervene in the matter for now.

Meanwhile, PetroSaudi International refused to confirm whether it owned Good Star Limited, the company which allegedly received US1.03 billion in funds diverted from the 1MDB-PetroSaudi joint-venture.

The public accounts committee (PAC) had found that Good Star Limited was owned by an individual not linked to PetroSaudi, but this crucial line was deleted by the committee's chief Hasan Arifin.

Perkasa flayed the PAC deputy chief Tan Seng Giaw for being apologetic about Hasan's actions when he described it as only a "mistake".

Adenan on charm offensive

Riding on his personal popularity, Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem urged voters to think of him and vote BN if they didn't like the ruling coalition's candidates in any constituency.

Adenan even assured voters that he did not intend to become governor after retirement like his predecessor Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Not everyone is happy with Adenan though, particularly Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming and Bukit Katil MP Shamsul Iskandar who were deported from Sarawak ahead of the May 7 election.

Ahead of the election, Malaysiakini also interviewed Sarawakians living in Klang Valley about what mattered most to them.

Other Kini bites:

Crimewatch NGO MyWatch suggested the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission probe an arms company owned by the daughter of inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar to establish if there is a conflict of interest .

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor failed to strike out PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli's fair comment defence in their defamation suit.

Sabah is following in Sarawak's footsteps in barring opposition politicians, the latest being PKR's Rafizi Ramli.

Federal minister Khairy Jamaluddin tells Sarawak voters not to vote for the opposition out of anger as it isn't going to bring them “development”.

Ex-premier Mahathir’s daughter Marina blasted a federal minister for claiming the stock market was affected by rumours using an old anecdote of a rumour that Mahathir's daughter had eloped.
