Kini Roundup: 1MDB default aftermath, Bank Negara gets new head

Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday.

Aftermath of 1MDB default

Analysts begin weighing in on the aftermath of 1MDB defaulting on a US$50 million interest payment, with ratings agency Moody's saying that this may hurt Malaysia's efforts to slash its deficit.

However, Fitch Rating said it did not expect immediate negative impact on Malaysia's credit ratings.

International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), which acted as guarantor for 1MDB's bonds, has also refused to pay the sum amid reports that the US$3.5 billion 1MDB was supposed to pay to the company had gone missing. But 1MDB president Arul Kanda Kandasamy said the missing money was an internal matter for IPIC to resolve.

Arul Kanda also accused certain personalities of spinning his words by claiming he had admitted to massive fraud in 1MDB, stating that he had only said this was a possibility.

Uncertainty ends over Bank Negara head

Bank Negara deputy governor Muhammad Ibrahim was finally named to take over the central bank from Zeti Akhtar Aziz, ending weeks of uncertainty.

An economist hailed Muhammad as the "right man" for the post.

Following this, prime minister's aide Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad accused The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) of lying after the publication previously speculated that Treasury secretary-general Irwan Serigar Abdullah may be picked for the position.

No end in sight for DAP-PKR clash

The clash between DAP and PKR continued as neither side is willing to concede in the run-up to the May 7 Sarawak election.

Amanah, the third partner in Pakatan Harapan, lamented that this is the result of weak leadership.

While BN is capitalising on the infighting, it is also facing threats of internal sabotage from unhappy component parties who have had to concede their traditional seats.

Malaysiakini also takes a look at how disenfranchised Sarawakians are being ignored in this election.

Other Kini bites

Embattled Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman asked journalists to refer to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on whether he can keep his job after courting the Terengganu sultan's displeasure.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said he was certain that Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem would remain in power after the state election.

A PKR leader pleaded for her motion on the state's transport master plan to be debated in the Penang state legislative assembly after 16 of her previous motions were rejected in the DAP-dominated House.

Looking ahead

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is expected to make her first public statement on the party's clash with DAP in Sarawak at a press conference this morning.

The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) is set to announce its findings into N Dharmendran's death in custody. Dharmendran was found dead in a police lock-up in 2013.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will take his campaign to oust Najib to his home state of Kedah with a ceramah in Jitra.
