Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar has confirmed that he ordered the police outrider service for Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be withdrawn.

Speaking to reporters in Kota Kinabalu, he said this is because police personnel should not be involved in events attended by the former premier which contravened the law and Federal Constitution.

"We revoked it because he uses the escort to attend illegal gatherings like the Bersih rally, Anti-GST rally, and collecting signatures for the (Citizens') Declaration.

"How can we escort him to such events? We cannot support it, so, I decided to revoke it," he was quoted as saying.

Khalid, however, said this was not a permanent denial, adding that it would be evaluated on a case by case basis.

The police chief also warned that non-police personnel who provided such service to Mahathir could face prosecution.

He said such untrained personnel could pose a danger to themselves and other road users.

"I hope Tun (Mahathir) understands our stand in having to uphold the laws of the country and our Constitution," he added.

Previously, Umno supreme council member Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said police outriders for Mahathir should have been withdrawn long ago.

The culture and tourism minister said this was because Mahathir has been using police outriders to escort him to anti-government functions.

"He brought it upon himself. I don't think he should get escorts as he is bashing the government that is providing him this privilege,” he added.

Since embarking on the Citizens’ Declaration to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, the former premier was also removed from his position as Petronas adviser.
