MACC to quiz Penang CM, wife tomorrow over bungalow saga

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will question Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and his wife Betty Chew over their controversial Pinhorn Road bungalow tomorrow.

According to NST Online, the couple has been asked to be present at the Penang MACC office where their statements would be recorded.

MACC investigations division director Azam Baki said both the commission and Lim's lawyers agreed last week on the meeting date.

"The time and place have been agreed upon. They will give their statement at 9.30am at the MACC Penang office located on Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, George Town," Azam said.

The bungalow became a hot issue when Lim was accused of purchasing it at below market value.

Umno lawmaker Shabudin Yahaya had claimed that the bungalow, on a 10,161 sq-ft plot of land, was bought by Lim on Oct 25 last year for RM2.8 million, when the market value of the property should have been between RM6 million and RM6.5 million.

'No further action'

Lim has denied any element of corruption and accused his rivals of concocting such allegations.

The bungalow's seller, businesswoman Phang Li Khoon, also denied any dealings with the state government in a statutory declaration (SD).

However, she was also investigated over claims of making a false SD.

Yesterday, Penang police chief Abdul Ghafar Rajab said the Attorney-General’s Chambers has classified "no further action" in the investigation into the complaint that Phang made a false SD.

However, the Attorney-General's Chambers, in a statement yesterday, has denied that it had made any decision on the matter, saying the case was still being studied.

The bungalow issue was also linked to the sale of the Taman Manggis state land, which Lim argued was done through an open tender process.
