Long-reigning former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has blasted Umno leaders who are supporting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak despite mounting scandals, saying they will pay a heavy price for their betrayal.

“Citizens everywhere have gathered to call for Najib to be removed from the post of prime minister.

“Umno leaders and members know their party will lose if Najib continues to lead BN and Umno in the 14th general election.

“Only the dumb and deaf would take no notice, and the destruction of Umno will take place,” wrote Mahathir on his blog today.

Recounting Umno’s past glory as a party that has given the country PM after PM "who have led the nation to the greatest heights", he lamented Umno leaders contiune to defend Najib “although it is clear he is involved in the worst scandals, and made Umno a party that is the most disgraceful in Malaysia”.

“(Yet) division leaders and members of parliament still continue to conspire with Najib to destroy Umno.

“Their grandchildren will curse them for this,” wrote the nonagenarian in his scathing posting.

“O Umno leaders, be mindful of your future. Your betrayal will receive proportionate retribution on this earth and in the hereafter,” wrote Mahathir.

The former Umno president has been at the forefront in calling for Najib to step down over alleged scandals and mismanagement of the country.

In particular, the 1MDB scandal and mounting international probes into related financial dealings has made it prime ammunition.

Mahathir is now holding gatherings across the country to garner signatures for the Citizens’ Declaration calling for Najib’s resignation, which aims to hit 1 million signatures before it is presented to the rulers for further action.
