Acid test for both opposition, gov’t in by-elections

YOURSAY | ‘Unlike Sarawak, the 1MDB issue will resonate with voters here.’

PAS will deliver surprise in Sg Besar, K Kangsar polls, vows Nik Abduh

Quigonbond: I don't think there will be an ideal outcome for the opposition in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar.

If Harapan and PAS both contest, Umno will win and PM Najib Razak strengthened. Therefore, Harapan should stay away and let PAS take on Umno (without supporting PAS in the by-election campaigns).

If Umno wins, people can finally write off PAS. If Umno wins, the equation is not changed in the Parliament. If PAS wins, they may start developing ambition to rule the country - but this can be tampered by delivering more solid votes to PKR and DAP in GE14 to make sure they check PAS.

Also, by respecting PAS this round, Harapan has moral high ground in seats allocation in GE14 and can tell the electorate that PAS are not gentlemen if they cannibalise Harapan seats.

If PAS gives a walkover to Umno because they are friendly to each other, then we also know not to trust PAS and can again write off PAS for GE14. Staying out of the two by-elections, would, in my view, be strategically sound for Harapan.

Not Convinced: The two by-elections will be an acid test for the opposition - on whether they can work together in face of a common adversary.

It will also be an acid test for the government - this will be the first election in the peninsula since the RM2.6 billion expose.

And unlike Sarawak, the 1MDB issue will resonate with voters here.

Hopeful123: PAS Youth chief Nik Abduh Nik Aziz, are you sure they are surprises and not shocks? You lost all the seats in the recent Sarawak elections despite talking big.

The last time you had big support was because of the non-Malay votes and that too because of (your late father) tok guru Nik Aziz.

Now with Abdul Hadi Awang in charge, the alleged Trojan horse, you can dream on.

Kuasa Rakyat: Surprise? The surprise could be that PAS will not contest but support Umno. Or conversely, Umno will not contest but support PAS.

Don't think that will happen? Why not? PAS is already Umnoised under Hadi.

I am curious why there are people who think that if there is a three-cornered contest, BN will definitely win. No, even if there is a three-cornered fight, Amanah will probably win.

Bear in mind that a sizeable portion of the votes obtained by PAS previously will desert them as the voters have seen that PAS (under Hadi) cannot be trusted and must be rejected.

Also, a sizeable number of so-called Umno votes will also vanish since the Malay voters are now smart enough to reject Najib, the man who has RM2.6 billion in his personal and private account.

On the contrary, if there is only a two-cornered fight, i.e. Amanah vs Umno, then Umno will stand a better chance to win as a portion of PAS votes will swing to Umno.

So, a three-cornered contest is much better.

Don't Worry Be Happy: Sooner or later, an unhealthy confrontation with this recalcitrant party will occur.

It is better to part ways with the evil force rather than allow them to threaten Pakatan Harapan unity. Act now or be sorry later.

If Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali wishes to engage with PAS until doomsday, spare us your wish.

"If a bird does not wish to cast its reflection, the water has no mind to receive its image." In short, no one is indispensable.

Wira: PAS will lose badly if everyone can be convinced that a vote for PAS is a vote for Umno.

If PAS can take both seats without any support from the non-Malays, that will be a big surprise. Otherwise, expect to lose big in both seats even without Pakatan Harapan's participation.

Korkor: Oh yes, I can’t wait to see the surprise, which is how badly PAS will lose after cosying up to Umno.

Amanah should contest both seats and it may have a good chance of winning. That's the surprise we want.

Bersih unveils seven election offences in S'wak, slams 'incompetent' EC

Lim Chong Leong: The Election Commission (EC) hasn’t even taken action against offences of the last 10 elections. They are not about to start with this.

Tony0409: What Bersih 2.0 and its chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah are doing, to monitor and report election fraud, is noble.

But merely reporting the election fraud in a report will not achieve anything. It's time to heighten our game plans: 1) Bersih 4.0. 2) Take BN to court.

Sinan Belawan: The Bersih report on election offences during the Sarawak election lacks professionalism.

What is the difference between bribery and unauthorised expenses? In the context of Sarawak, transport assistance is a need.

Balachan Cili: Maria Chin, from what I understand you can bark until the cow comes home - the EC will never listen.

Beh Tahan: The EC is not incompetent. It just closes one eye.
