Zaid wants Kit Siang, Mat Sabu to save opposition

Zaid Ibrahim is planning to hold separate discussions with DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Mohamad Sabu on the state of the opposition.

The former minister said the two must act fast to save the opposition pact from its current directionless and confused.

Reiterating the need for DAP and Amanah to collaborate, he said the term Pakatan Harapan has become meaningless.

Zaid said Amanah must contest the upcoming by-elections in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar with DAP's help.

"Some from PKR who are not enamoured with PAS and who are also tired of the long-running rivalry between (PKR deputy president) Azmin Ali and (president) Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail may also pitch in to help.

"Even Umno voters who are tired of the perceived lack of seriousness on the part of the dissenters may help," he added in a new posting.

According to Zaid, Amanah made a mistake in contesting the Sarawak state elections, where the PAS splinter failed to clinch a single seat.

Therefore, he said, Amanah would work hard to redeem itself.

"If they lose, at least they went into battle knowing who their comrades-in-arms were.

"At least they would have sent a message to the people that they are all in agreement about corruption, abuse of power and other issues.

"If NGOs want to support PAS, let them. If NGOs want to support PKR, let them," he added.

What is important, he said, is for DAP and Amanah to be consistent about the reforms the country needs.

"They have to show that leaders in political parties can be loyal to one another and will fight together for the common good, which are the things most ordinary people want," he added.

Zaid pointed out that it is insufficient to merely call for BN's defeat and for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to step down.

"They need to do more - they need to uphold good values and ideas if they want to transform this government.

"They must not be sidetracked into doing anything expedient for short-term gains and forget the reasons why they are in politics in the first place," he said.
