Minister challenged to prove WSJ, Sarawak Report wrong

Minister Salleh Said Keruak must show instances where US daily The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and whistleblower website Sarawak Report had misreported on the 1MDB saga, to prove the reports are not credible, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said.

This is after Salleh said Malaysians cannot accept WSJ’s multiple reports on 1MDB unless it reveals its sources.

“It would be difficult to find a denser statement than the one made by Salleh that The Wall Street Journal cannot convince Malaysians if it does not reveal the sources of its stories,” the Gelang Patah MP said in a statement.

Lim said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has yet to take legal action against WSJ, despite threatening to do so last year, while the block on Sarawak Report remains unjustified.

“It is now some 10 months since Salleh had abused his ministerial powers to block access by Malaysians to the whistleblower website, Sarawak Report, but this had not prevented the website from continuing its exposé of Najib’s twin mega scandals.

“Can Salleh cite the instances of Sarawak Report website exposé for over a year about Najib’s twin mega scandals which are false or untrue?

“Herein lies the answer as to who does not have credibility, whether locally or internationally,” Lim (photo) said.

Most of WSJ’s reports on 1MDB cite unnamed US investigators, while Sarawak Report has cited various sources, including classified Malaysian documents and e-mail leaks from 1MDB-linked firm PetroSaudi.

Lim was referring to the 1MDB saga and billions of ringgit found in Najib’s bank account, purportedly donations from the Saudi royal family.

In its latest report, the WSJ said Jho Low, a businessman who played a key role in 1MDB’s founding, is divesting his assets as the probe continues.

Yesterday, it reported US investigators are zooming in on multi-million US dollar properties owned by Najib’s stepson Riza Aziz, in London, Los Angeles and New York.

Malaysiakini cannot independently verify the reports, but has contacted Riza through his Hollywood film production firm Red Granite Pictures for a response.

A Red Granite spokesperson told the news portal it will respond soon.
