Perkasa has asked the government to sue the Wall Street Journal if its reports were indeed defamatory of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

This was after the publication yesterday claimed investigators are looking into Najib’s step-son Riza Aziz’s 23 million pounds sterling (RM137 million) purchase of a property in London as part of the probe into 1MDB.

“Perkasa’s integrity, anti-corruption and abuse of power bureau urges the Malaysian government to proceed with its intention to sue the Wall Street Journal if its reports is indeed defamatory against Najib,” said bureau chief Muhammad Faiz Na'aman.

He added that there had been several such reports on Najib and 1MDB by the international media.

As such, he said it would only be appropriate if legal action is taken against at least one of the publications to set an example if the government believed the allegations were unfounded.

He said this was to prevent Malaysia’s reputation from being sullied in the eyes of the world.

Muhammad Faiz also reiterated Perkasa’s urging for the Conference of Rulers to set up a royal commission of inquiry to look into the 1MDB matter.

“The government’s failure to prosecute anyone over the 1MDB scandal may cause a lost of confidence in the country, not only among the majority Malaysians, but also foreign investors and the international community,” he said.
