Victims of flash floods can sue local authorities, says lawyer

Victims affected by the recent flash floods in the city can sue the local authorities for damages, said a lawyer.

A counsel at a private law firm, Syahredzan Johan, said they would, however, have to provide evidence supported by relevant experts to show negligence by the local authority concerned.

“For instance, in this case, the victims can get advice from experts in engineering to testify on their behalf in court.

“The testimony will be based on evidence, such as the witness testimony, newspaper clippings, pictures of the incident and receipts for payments made in the case,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.

However, he said, due to the high cost involved in getting professional advice, the victims seldom pursue the matter.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) was prepared if sued by the victims of the recent flash floods.

“We have our own lawyers to resolve the matter,” he told Bernama through a WhatsApp message today.

Currently, DBKL is conducting inspection and cleaning of the drainage system in the city, including areas affected by the recent flash floods.

Last May 12, flash floods occurred in the city, submerging several roads, including Jalan Pantai Baru and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim that affected more than 100 vehicles.
