PARLIAMENT Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has claimed that the police force is the "top career choice" for today's youth as the job gives them a bright future.

"The youths of today have placed the police career as their main choice as it can guarantee their future, with the offer of attractive salary and fair chance of promotion," he said in a parliamentary written reply.

Zahid, who spoke in his capacity as the home minister, claimed that the police force has recorded an increase in recruitment of non-Malays following the proactive measures taken.

He was responding to Kamarul Bahrin Shah (Amanah-Kuala Terengganu) who asked on the efforts taken to increase the recruitment of non-Malays into the force.

The figure provided in Zahid's (photo) reply, however, showed only about 20 percent of the new recruits, as of April 30, were non-Malays.

The Chinese, in particular, appeared not to be interested, with only 2,615 or 1.96 percent of the 133,212 new intakes.

Meanwhile, 4,209 Indians (3.16 percent) and 275 Punjabis (0.21 percent) have joined the force.

With a total 106,871 new recruits, the Malays remain the largest composition, which constitutes 80.23 percent.

Zahid said the government has conducted multi-ethnic recruitment campaigns over the years.

He added that the government had also started an online recruitment on special intakes to attract those who are fluent in other languages.

According to Zahid, the district police chiefs have also contacted the associations from the Chinese and Indian communities to encourage them to join the force.
