Johor DAP assistant publicity chief Sheikh Omar Ali has urged Pakatan Harapan to maintain its focus on 1MDB and not be distracted by the hudud polemic.

This is after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for the first time succeeded in tabling the hudud bill with the backing from the government.

"I urge Pakatan Harapan parties not to deviate from the focus on the bigger issue, described as the mother of all scandals in Malaysia, which is 1MDB.

"1MDB is a major betrayal by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Umno-BN of the people's trust.

"We do not have time to look back, and for the people and us, who are in danger, to continuously fall into the prolonged hudud polemic," he said in a statement last night.

Sheikh Omar pointed out that this is not the first time the hudud issue is being played up.

He added the people should be mature enough to evaluate the rationale of the hudud debate.

He stressed that at present, the rakyat are suffering under a corrupt government and Harapan should focus on important issues in the upcoming by-elections in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar.

"If we continue to focus on the real issues, Harapan's victory in both by-elections can be realised," he said.

The twin by-elections were called following the deaths of Noriah Kasnon (Sungai Besar MP) and Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad (Kuala Kangsar MP) in a helicopter crash during the recent Sarawak election campaign period.

Both seats are Malay majority constituencies.
