Is attacking us, Umno's price for Hudud Bill's fast-track, DAP asks PAS

A DAP leader asked if PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's recent attacks, accusing it of opposing Islam, is part payment to Umno for fast-tracking the Islamic party's Hudud Bill.

"Such wild allegations were usually bandied by Umno to vilify DAP among the Muslims and it seems that now PAS is in cahoots with the Malay party in order to extend its political shelf-life," said DAP chief whip Anthony Loke in a statement.

He reminded Abdul Hadi that during the Pakatan Rakyat era, DAP leaders were the ones who defended PAS from attacks by BN components in the non-Muslim community that ridiculed syariah law, especially from MCA leaders.

Such that until today, MCA continues to blame DAP as the party which helped to strengthen PAS in GE13, until Umno itself cannot oppose PAS in implementing hudud, Loke said.

Thus, he felt that Hadi's defence of BN component parties like MCA, MIC and Gerakan, while lambasting DAP as uncivilised and opposing Islam, is regretted and totally unfair.

"Is this part of the deal with Umno to allow him to table the Private Member's Bill in Parliament in exchange for helping the Malay party oppose DAP?" asked Loke further.

In any case, he said that DAP expressed regret and categorically denied the allegations leveled by the PAS president, who had accused the socialist democratic party's lawmakers questioning the fast-track of his Private Member's Bill, as opposing Islam.

He clarified that what was questioned by the DAP lawmakers on Thursday was only on Standing Orders and House procedures, in how the government allowed the Bill to be fast-tracked for what they see as political motives.

They are also questioning why the government allowed the bill to be tabled without notice as if to entrap MPs who were unprepared to debate the Bill.

Loke added that DAP's stand on hudud has been consistent since its Pakatan Rakyat days, whereby it doesn't agree with the Islamic penal code's implementation as it is seen to contravene the federal constitution and impractical in the context of Malaysia's diverse society.

"In our discussion when disagreeing with PAS on the hudud issue all this while, DAP leaders never ridiculed syariah law or made enemies of Muslims. DAP has never been anti-Islam," concluded the Seremban parliamentarian.
