M'sia 'not committed' to nuclear power, but studies go on

Malaysia is still conducting extensive research on nuclear technology, at the same time educating the people about the energy form.

Malaysian Nuclear Agency (MNA) deputy director-general, Mohd Ashhar Kalid said, Malaysia was still not committed in using nuclear as a source to generate electricity anytime soon but conducting research and educating the public were crucial for the country.

"We are still not ready to venture into nuclear energy yet as the understanding of the people regarding nuclear energy is still very low.

"Many are still not prepared for nuclear energy," he told reporters after launching the World Nuclear University (WNU) Short Course in George Town, today.

The nuclear technology was widely used among others in medicine, laboratory testing, engineering, aviation, environment and green energy, which contradicted the belief that nuclear was only used to build weapons of mass destruction, he added.

The short course is organised by University Sains Malaysia (USM) together with MNA and WNU, themed 'Overview and Key Topics in the World Nuclear Industry Today'.

The objective is to strengthen the expertise of new nuclear education institutions based in Malaysia as well as to meet the needs of education and training at local and international levels.

The three-day seminar starts on May 30 with 60 participants from 22 countries, and seven speakers who will present their paperwork on nuclear technology.
