Anwar twists opposition's ears over twin polls blame game

Former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has reached out from behind bars to 'twist' the opposition parties' ears over the ongoing blame game, after losing to BN in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections.

"The opposition must look at this electoral outcome with humility, and take a hard look at our weaknesses.

"This is no time for excuses or blame," said the jailed politician in a statement through his lawyers.

Although he is in prison, he said he understood how the results of the recent by-elections do seem to be disappointing to many who have pinned their hopes upon the opposition, to save Malaysia from the current government which he labelled as an "oppressive, corrupt and morally bankrupt regime".

He said without a change of administration, Malaysia has no hope of a better future or regaining the respect of the world, noting that even though local authorities had washed Prime Minister Minister Najib Razak clean of all complicity in alleged wrongdoings, the latter is nevertheless at the centre of a financial scandal of global proportions.

To give Malaysians that chance at respectability, Anwar argued the opposition must come together.

"Remember constantly that it is our moral duty to provide a genuine alternative to the people.

"Put aside all differences, put aside internecine quarrels. Bring up grievances in the proper forum; sit together and resolve matters," he said.

'BN defeat possible'

He also argued for inter-party and intra-party spats among the opposition to be set aside in the interest of the people.

"Only the welfare of the rakyat and the country matters; and we exist to serve the rakyat. We must defeat the BN in the 14th general election, we must come through for the sake of Malaysia," he wrote.

Anwar said those who now feel they cannot defeat BN in the next GE are wrong, stressing a united opposition is crucial to success.

"To do so, we must all pull together. It is not an easy task; we face the entrenched power and undemocratic tactics of the BN.

"But we have a noble cause, (while) they merely cling to power for power's sake. If we stand united and determined for the sake of the rakyat, we will prevail," concluded the PKR defacto leader.

As Anwar languishes in prison, PKR and other opposition parties continue to be embroiled either in internal power struggles or inter-party spats as all blamed one another for the recent spate of election losses, including the massive landslide defeat in the Sarawak state elections.

Najib, whose administration continues to be rocked by scandal, has capitalised on the opposition squabbles to sail through to victory in the elections that BN-loyalists tout as proof the public support the embattled PM.
