Gerakan president disagrees with labelling DAP 'kafir harbi'

Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong has disagreed with Pahang mufti Abdul Rahman Osman's labelling DAP as kafir harbi.

It is an Islamic belief that kafir harbi refers to non-believers who can be slain for waging war against Islam.

“I do not agree. That's wrong” he told a press conference after officiating a function in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was questioned on whether he agreed with the mufti labelling all those against hudud, including DAP, as kafir harbi.

Asked whether he, as minister in the prime minister's department, would raise the issue in the cabinet, Mah skirted the question.

“I will discuss with the relevant people,” he said, reiterating that he disagreed with the Pahang mufti's stand.

Last Friday the mufti was reported in Utusan Malaysia as calling DAP kafir harbi for opposing PAS' move to implement hudud in Kelantan through its president Abdul Hadi Awang's motion to move a Private Member's Bill.

The bill to amend federal syariah limits caused an uproar prior to the recent twin by-elections, when Najib purportedly instructed Umno MP Azalina Othman Said to fast track Hadi's motion on the bill on the last day of the parliamentary sitting.

The mufti's critics have pointed out that to pronounce someone as 'kafir harbi' was a serious matter as it was meant specifically for those said to wage war against Islam, and purportedly permits those so labelled to be slain.

The severity of the matter is exacerbated by the growing Islamic State (IS) terrorist threat in the country, warned critics.

Abdul Rahman has received brickbats not only from opposition parties but also the Malay right-wing organisation Perkasa.
