Kit Siang: Who is more dangerous, Pahang mufti or IS?

The backlash against Pahang mufti Abdul Rahman Osman continued today, with DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang questioning if the religious leader was more dangerous than Islamic State (IS) member Mohd Rafi Udin.

Although Rafi had appeared in a IS video threatening to attack the Bukit Aman police headquarters, and urging supporters to kill non-believers, Lim said Abdul Rahman was a bigger threat for calling DAP kafir harbi.

The term refers to non-Muslims who are at war against Islam, and persons so labelled are considered as permitted to be killed.

"I think it is the latter (Abdul Rahman) who poses a greater threat to the integrity and success of the Malaysian nation-building process than the former (Rafi).

"There is a police Special Branch counter-terrorism division whose special responsibility is to be vigilant and prepared for such IS threats.

"But Malaysia seemed to be completely defenceless to IS-minded religious officials preaching doctrines no different from IS," Lim said.

He said the state mufti's statement was "the most serious and dangerous attack on the basis of the Malaysian Constitution and the Malaysian nation-building process".

The Gelang Patah MP said cabinet ministers tomorrow must address this issue, otherwise they would have abdicated their national duties and responsibilities.

Abdul Rahman was reported in Utusan Malaysia last Friday as calling DAP kafir harbi for opposing PAS' move to implement hudud in Kelantan through its president Abdul Hadi Awang's Private Member's Bill.

But he later told Malaysiakini that his statement was not only directed at DAP but all those who opposed Islam.

In response to the outcry, Abdul Rahman yesterday defended his statement and refused to apologise.
