'PAS helping BN retake S'gor if it refuses to change'

Parti Amanah Negara communications director Khalid Samad said PAS would be wilfully helping BN to wrest back Selangor if it remains insistent on going it alone in elections.

He said this in light of the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections, which saw PAS and Pakatan Harapan contesting in three-cornered fights with BN, which only benefited the ruling coalition.

"PAS' participation as a third party in three-cornered contests is not so much of seeking victory but to help BN win," he said in a statement today.

Khalid insisted that it was PAS that was playing spoiler as the party was the one which broke away from Harapan's predecessor, Pakatan Rakyat.

"Whatever the argument is, the fact is PAS chose to be alone while Harapan comprises three parties," he said.

He said if PAS was sincere about seeing BN defeated, it should engage Harapan.

"If PAS sees BN as an opponent and wishes to bring down BN in the interest of the people and country, then the very least PAS should do is to negotiate and cooperate with Harapan or join the coalition like Pakatan Rakyat before this," he said.

He added that if PAS refused, then it was apparent that the party was out to help BN win.

"This is the reality of PAS today. It is no longer an opposition party against BN. PAS doesn't care if BN falls or not.

"What is important for PAS now is to see DAP and Harapan being unable to form the (Selangor) government.

"PAS' desire to win is also not to bring down BN. Even if it wins, it will not necessarily work with Harapan to form the government.

"If necessary, PAS will not be reluctant to form the government with BN," he said.

In the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections on June 18, BN won by a 6,969-vote majority and 9,191-vote majority respectively.

Both by-elections saw BN, PAS and Amanah contesting against each other while the Kuala Kangsar by-election saw an additional independent candidate.
