New ministers, deputy ministers determined to champion the people

New ministers and deputy ministers appointed in a cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak yesterday are determined to implement government policy to champion the people.

Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Noh Omar said he would focus on the plight of city folks, especially the government's desire to fight poverty.

"I will not introduce new policies and will continue what has been planned by Abdul Rahman Dahlan with some modification. I will discuss with him the new policies and approaches introduced," he told reporters after taking the oath of office and allegiance and oath of secrecy before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah at Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur today.

Meanwhile, Second Finance Minister Johari Abdul Ghani described his appointment as a heavy responsibility in facing the challenging economy.

"I have to convince the people that this country will continue to thrive and take into account the principles that should be emphasised by the government."

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department SK Devamany said his appointment would give him him the opportunity to strengthen BN to face the 14th general election.

"As the MIC deputy president, I will assist president Dr S Subramaniam and the MIC supreme council in serving the people.

Meanwhile, Deputy Finance Minister Othman Aziz said he would assist Johari to ensure that the monetary and fiscal policy would be implemented.

"Any decision made in the budget will be implemented, especially regarding the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) and the aid for fishermen," he added.
