Cops: Terrorists would have attacked adjacent clubs with more patrons

Police have insisted that the grenade attack in a nightclub in Puchong was not perpetrated by terrorists, but rather an incident related to gangland feud.

"Clearly, if the Islamic State (IS) wanted to attack, there was a club next door which had 80 to 90 customers (at the time), wouldn't it have been a likelier target?" asked Selangor deputy police chief Abdul Rahim Jaafar, according to China Press.

More than 20 people were watching the Spain versus Italy Euro 2016 match at the Movida club when a grenade was hurled into the premises at around 2.15am.

The attack injured eight people, with one of them serious.

Abdul Rahim said the incident was a criminal case, pointing out there had been similar gang-related attacks in the past.

In October 2014, a club in Bukit Bintang was hit by a grenade in a botched assassination attempt against a gambling kingpin.

Two men had hurled grenades at the parking lot of the club as the gambling kingpin was leaving, killing a car jockey and injuring 13 others including the kingpin's bodyguard and driver.

In the latest attack, an IS-linked Facebook profile claimed responsibility for the attack but police denied this.

The owner of Modiva Roger Hew said preliminary investigations showed a couple who were celebrating their wedding anniversary at the premises was the target.

"An eyewitness saw two Indian men throw an explosive at the said couple.

"This is an isolated case and does not in any way indicate that the attack is derived from any religion, belief or race," he had said in a Facebook posting.
