Victim: Why use a grenade, just shoot me if I was the target

In the wake of a hand grenade being lobbed into a nightspot leaving eight injured, police and the establishment's owner were quick to put to rest speculation that it could be the work of terrorists.

In a Facebook post, Movida owner Roger Hew pointed the finger at an Indian couple, claiming that preliminary investigations showed the husband and wife were the target.

Following this, the spotlight fell on S Jaiseelan and his wife M Bavani who were celebrating their wedding anniversary in the establishment.

However, the 32-year-old personal driver was incensed and threatened legal action if Hew did not apologise.

Jaiseelan also questioned the need to use an explosive device and injure other innocent people if he was the target.

"If what he (Hew) says is true, and the attackers were after me, why didn't they just shoot me or get to me in other ways?

"Why go all the way to hurl a bomb that could also hurt so many innocent' people?" he was quoted as saying by FMT when met at the hospital.

Disputing Hew's claim that the explosive was thrown at them, he pointed out the grenade had hit a Chinese man who was with a woman friend, seated several tables away from Jaiseelan and his wife.

Jaiseelan also claimed that he did not have enemies or a criminal record.

"What proof does the bar owner have in blaming us for the attack?

"I work to make a decent living for my family. His allegations are totally baseless and irresponsible," he said.

In his Facebook post, Hew claimed that preliminary investigations of the incident showed that it involved two patrons, an Indian couple, who were targeted due to personal matters.

"An eyewitness saw two Indian men throw an explosive at the said couple. This is an isolated case and does not in any way indicate that the attack is derived from any religion, belief or race. The said couple is stable and suffered minor injuries," he had added.

Selangor deputy police chief Abdul Rahim Jaafar said the explosion was not an act of terror despite a Facebook posting claiming that Islamic State (IS) was responsible.

"We will investigate the incident from all aspects, whether it was fuelled by business rivalry, vengeance or if the suspect was targeting specific individuals there," he added.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

Abdul Rahim said if terrorists were involved, they would have targeted the adjacent spots which had more patrons at the time.

Last week, in its latest propaganda video, IS had called for lone wolf attacks against non-believers using whatever means possible.

In a related development, Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali condemned the attack on Movida and urged the police to take stern action.
