Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has warned against allowing mosques to be used for political purposes.

"Some politicians have used mosques in Selangor for political purposes.

"What is even more disappointing is that some of them are non-Muslims," he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.

The state ruler said guardians of mosques that allowed this to happen should be sacked.

"The services of such nazir (guardians) should be terminated and the post given to others," he added during a breaking fast event at Masjid Kampung Johan Setia in Klang yesterday.

Meanwhile, Selangor exco in charge of Islamic Affairs Ahmad Yunus Hairi was quoted as saying by The Star that non-Muslims are not allowed into the inner area of a mosque.

"Non-Muslims can participate in events and activities in the mosque compound but must not go into the inner area where the prayers are conducted," he said.

He added that mosques should be used to unite and not divide the congregation.
