Amidst attacks by members claiming to represent the militant group Islamic State in several spots, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has assured that Penang as a key tourist destination in the country will remain safe.

He said state police chief Abdul Ghafar Rejab has given assurances that Penang will be “under control”.

Lim condemned the attacks which recently took place in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh and the Holy City of Medina, saying he regretted the incidents which happened during Ramadan,.

He added that the confirmation by inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar that the attack in Puchong last week was carried out by IS has attracted much attention.

“The CPO said he has not received any report regarding any attack but assured that more officers will patrol the state to keep things under control,” Lim told a press conference in George Town today.

“We hope Penang will not only continue to be green and clean but also safe. After all, Penang is one of the safest state, where crime is concerned."

The DAP secretary-general said the Aidilfitri celebrations will continue to be as festive as years past despite the attacks and expressed hope that the good relationship between Penangites will continue to foster.

Asked regarding the main areas that the police would monitor, Lim said the police have the details.

“We leave the operational details to the police, this should not be revealed by non-security officers,” he added.

During the press conference, Lim handed over RM5,000 each to two religious schools, Ma’Had Ad-Dawah Al-Islamiyyah and Yayasan An-Nahdhoh Pulau Pinang, and the cheques were received by Ustaz Subri Arshad and Ustaz Mutalib Maarof respectively.
