Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim) has urged parents to brush up on their technological prowess so they can better monitor their children's activities online for any links to the Islamic State (IS).

This is part of the group's advice in trying to prevent the spread of IS idealogy.

"It is very important to monitor internet usage by your family members, especially the youth in order to prevent them from being influenced by this idealogy.

"To ensure such a thing can be done effectively, parents specifically should improve their technological proficiency, especially when it comes to social media," Abim said in a press statement today.

Family is an institution which has to be strengthened to halt the spread of IS' extremist idealogies in the country, so they urged everyone to play a proactive role in their families to monitor the level of acceptance their family members have towards the idealogy.

"It is very important to know who our family members are communicating with on social media because only then can we detect how accepting family members are of the IS idealogy," Abim added.

This would then make it easier to prevent family members from getting involved in IS' terrorist activities, they said.

Abim also urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities, even if it involved family members or close friends, so that the authorities can take action before it's too late.

They are concerned with the spread of IS idealogy within the country, following the attack on the nightspot Movida in Puchong on June 28, which the inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar had said involved IS elements.

Khalid also revealed that 15 people had been arrested in connection with terror-related activities. Out of this, two of the suspects were related to the Puchong attack.
