Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar has cautioned media organisations against providing space and a platform for Islamic State (IS) terrorists and their supporters.

He said these individuals hunger for media attention.

"The media should not allow these criminals to glorify their actions, as it could serve to influence others.

"This is a sensitive security issue, and the media must tread on this carefully. I would not hesitate to act against those who compromise the safety of this nation," he told Malaysiakini.

Khalid was responding to interviews published by the News Straits Times and Oriental News Daily on a Malaysian IS leader warning of more attacks.

Both publications had quoted Muhammad Wandy Mohamed Jedi, who is said to be responsible for ordering the hand grenade attack on a nightclub in Puchong.

Meanwhile, Khalid said media practitioners must exercise responsibility when dealing with such matters, and not create panic among the people.

"These people (terrorists) thrive on media attention. They want recognition. Give them the space, and it would embolden them further," he added.

"We have been dealing with security threats for a long time, and we know how to prevent the situation from exacerbating," he said.

Khalid said the police, especially its counter terrorism unit, is on surveillance round-the-clock to detect such terror elements.

He vowed that more crackdowns and arrests are in the pipeline.

On the same note, Khalid also advised all quarters, including politicians, religious figures and NGOs not to indulge in incendiary remarks regarding race and religion.

"Combatting terrorism is a collective effort and everyone must play a role," he said.

The attack in Puchong, which left eight wounded, came in the wake of an IS propaganda video which warned of attacks against Malaysian police and non-believers.
