Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali has refused to comment about the Selangor State Religious Department (Jais) sermon last Wednesday praising PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's Private Member’s Bill.

When asked for his response today, Azmin curtly replied, "(The sermon) didn't even mention the PAS president's name, that is your interpretation."

He was speaking to reporters during the state's Aidilfitri open house in Shah Alam today.

The event was graced by Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Also spotted was the brother of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, CIMB chief executive officer Mohd Nazir Abdul Razak.

Jais' sermon in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri lauded the Private Member’s Bill as a victory for Muslims.

“We are thankful for our victory to bring the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act Amendment Bill 2016 motion in Parliament, which is purely to raise the stature of syariah courts in the country," read the sermon that was used in the state's mosques.

The sermon also praised the Kuala Lumpur High Court decision to dismiss a challenge by NGO Sisters in Islam (SIS) against a Selangor fatwa declaring the group as ‘deviant’.

Hadi's bill, which is the final obstacle for Kelantan PAS to implement its hudud enactment, courted controversy when his motion in Parliament was fast-tracked by Umno minister Azalina Othman Said.
