Perkasa has lodged a police report against the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism's (MCCBCHST) for linking controversial Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik to the deadly Dhaka attack.

Wira Perkasa chief Zahir Zulkamar in his police report said the MCCBCHST’s remarks were unfounded, and urged the police to probe the interfaith group for making a misleading statement which touched on Muslim sensitivities.

“It is as though they (MCCBCHST) want to divide Malaysians, the majority of whom are Muslims. They also appear to be deliberately causing fear and defaming Islam in this country, by linking Islam to terrorism,” Zahir had said.

MCCBCHST deputy president RS Mohan Shan was reported as saying on Thursday that Zakir had advocated terrorism to youths.

The remarks were made following Bangladeshi media reports that two of the gunmen involved in the Dhaka attack were social media followers of Zakir.

Zakir has denied advocating terrorism.

Last Saturday, gunmen attacked an upscale cafe in the Bangladeshi capital, killing 20 people inside, before police stormed the building and rescued 13 hostages.

It was reported that six of the gunmen were killed during the police operation and one had been captured.

Two of the gunmen were then reported to be social media followers of Zakir.

On Monday, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar had confirmed that two of those involved in the attack studied at Monash university in Sunway, but could not verify if the pair were attackers or victims.

Monash University has also said that they have yet to receive any confirmation if the former students were victims or assailants.

They added that they will provide an update once identities have been confirmed by the authorities.
