Why hasn't Najib denied S'wak Report leaks as fake, asks MP

An opposition MP has asked why neither Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak nor auditor-general Ambrin Buang have come forward to denounce Sarawak Report's articles on 1MDB and the documents it published as false.

Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar said the authenticity of the documents related to the 1MDB audit could be established simply by reading the reports.

"The only one who has commented is Multimedia and Communications Minister Salleh Said Keruak, who has urged the police to investigate how the classified documents from the auditor-general's department on 1MDB were obtained by Sarawak Report.

"And Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed, who urged the police to investigate," he said in a statement.

"Actually, once the auditor-general reads the Sarawak Report articles he can confirm if what is reported is true or not.

"If the reports are false, then it does not arise that there is a leak.

"Najib can then simply take legal action against Sarawak Report for libel," he said.

Last week, the London-based website began publishing what it claims are contents from the auditor-general's report on 1MDB, which is currently classified under the Official Secrets Act 1972 (OSA).

The articles prompted opposition leaders to urge the government to disclose the full report, while the government has decried the leaks and vowed to investigate.

However, Mahfuz said it would be a waste of taxpayers’ money for the police to probe the matter.

“I suggest that the police let Sarawak Report reveal the auditor-general’s report in its entirety, and if Najib’s administration is brave enough, declassify the auditor-general’s report on 1MDB from the OSA, allow the public to view it, and let the people compare it with the reports from Sarawak Report.

“If the two reports are the same, then the inspector-general of police, the chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the governor of Bank Negara, and the attorney-general should drag Najib for prosecution, not investigate who leaked the OSA document.

“If the Sarawak Report articles are found to be false, then we shall wait to see if Najib is brave enough to take action against it for defaming him,” he said.
