'Maravan' director turns focus on Malaysia's rich language diversity

The success of local Tamil film, 'Maravan' in earning international recognition has inspired its director to produce a 'Malaysian film' focusing on the rich language diversity in the country.

SD Puvanendran plans to produce a film which will serve as a lesson to be learnt from online scam, incorporating all languages of the communities in the country.

"We want to improve on our production and come up with a story which has never been done before, focusing more on the original story which is happening in the country," he told Bernama after The Nation programme aired by Bernama News Channel (BNC) at Wisma Bernama in Kuala Lumpur today.

The film, 'Maravan', which tells a story of cruelty and dehumanising practice of human trafficking in seeking wealth, won the 'Best Country Award' at the International Open Film Festival (IOFF) 2016 New York/Dhaka held from June 10 to 14.

Puvanendran said filming for his latest film was expected to begin year-end and the team was still in the process of selecting the cast and suitable script.

"We have confidence in the story line as it is related to the current issue of a country, and the film will be able to sell and hopefully, receive more acclaim," he added.

He said the production team was also planning to hold a 'world tour' of the film in European countries, apart from Korea and Japan as well as hold a private screening in September.

The film, 'Maravan', which hit local cinemas on Oct 8 last year also qualified as semi-finalist at the Phoenix Film Festival Melbourne 2016, and managed to qualify for official selection at several places, including Barcelona (Spain), Russia and Singapore.

The movie produced by M Chandran, who is also the scriptwriter, starred SM Haridhass, Kumaresh, Denesh Kumar and Kavitha Thiagarajan.
