Police warned today that those found circulating rumours of communal violence during Malaysia Day celebrations can be charged under the Sedition Act.
The "seditious message" advising non-Malays to stock up for possible riots and violence against them during the Sept 16 parade is making rounds on social media, police spokesperson Asmawati Ahmad said in a statement.
"The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would like to affirm that the message is a baseless conjecture by irresponsible quarters, seeking to jeopardise racial harmony and undermine public order," she said.
She warned that action can be taken under Secion 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
"The public is also advised to contact the relevant authorities when they are in doubt of messages being circulated," she said.
