‘Opposition can’t form a good coalition due to ideological differences’

The opposition is not able to form a better coalition than Barisan Nasional (BN) because of their differences in ideologies, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said.

The Barisan Nasional (BN), with 13 component parties, is able to work well, as it has only one agenda, which is to serve the people.

“The BN coalition talks about the country’s policies and the direction we are heading in, whereas the opposition still can’t even decide on who are the partners of their alliance,” she said through her Facebook page today.

She was commenting on a statement by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on 14 July saying he (Dr Mahathir) would set up a new party that would be part of a new opposition alliance in the next general election.

Azalina said BN remained relevant and proved to be the people’s choice based on its track record and clear mission as well as political struggle to serve the people, whereas the opposition did not understand this fact.

“With the formation of a new coalition, Dr Mahathir appears to have become the new de facto leader, can he be accepted by both the cartels Azmin, Wan Azizah or Lim Kit Siang?

“I’m puzzled with the opposition, they formed numerous coalitions, changed the name several times, but have yet to even form a shadow cabinet... (they) change the name of the alliance and political associates like changing clothes,” she said.

She said history had proven that the establishment of Parti Melayu Semangat 46 (S46) comprising former members and leaders of Umno failed for not having direction, and eventually, they returned to Umno.

S46 was an Umno splinter party formed in 1988, after Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah was defeated by Dr Mahathir for the Umno presidency at the time.
