1MDB is damning indictment of BN's stewardship of nation’s coffers

YOURSAY | 'The culprits for such colossal theft of public funds and callous betrayal of public trust must answer.'

It’s official - the 1MDB money was stolen

Kim Quek: This political tornado from the US has hit hard on PM Najib Razak, his cohorts and the entire Umno/BN kleptocracy.

The abundance of iron-clad evidence, down to minute details, will leave Malaysian law enforcing institutions and regulators with no more justification for their inaction.

The culprits for such colossal theft of public funds and callous betrayal of public trust will have to answer for the heinous crimes committed against the people. Cohorts of Najib will henceforth be covering up these crimes at their own peril.

And Najib’s already perilous premiership will become acutely untenable. There will be an inevitable re-alignment in the Malaysian political mosaic across the political divide.

In particular, PAS will have to rethink its future with regards to Abdul Hadi Awang’s pro-Najib/Umno leanings. It may also hasten the exodus from Umno to Mahathir Mohamad/Muhyiddin Yassin’s new party, and cause disorientation among the parasitic parties in BN.

Pakatan Harapan must fully capitalise on the current crisis of confidence in the Najib leadership.

Apart from pressing for law enforcement on the 1MDB culprits, it must prioritise a campaign to educate the masses, particularly the rural people, of the truth regarding the grand betrayal of the people, under Najib leadership.

The recent two by-elections have shown that such a truth has not penetrated the rural areas. Political enlightenment of Umno’s electoral support base is absolutely essential if Pakatan wants to reach Putrajaya.

Anonymous #32557251: The whole world knew that something was very wrong with 1MDB, yet our government kept telling us everything about 1MDB was okay.

How can I trust our government anymore? And one of the people named by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) is closely related to our very top official. My heart is bleeding.

Cogito Ergo Sum: This indictment by the US attorney-general is not just damning of certain individuals alone. It is damning of the entire BN stewardship of the national coffers.

Not only were the cabinet members complicit, but the entire government machinery is guilty of facilitating this act of grand larceny. And it can't get grander than this.

Even the agencies responsible for investigating this delinquency were compromised. The very commission entrusted with policing corruption, became corrupted by transfers, resignations and premature retirement.

The entire bureaucracy is a house of cards waiting to be blown down. And now it is crumbling, deck by deck. Talk about gambling. This was one hand that was lost the minute the cards were dealt.

It had dealt BN the blow that the GE could not because of electoral fraud. Go, BN, go. And never come back. It will take generations to pay for your indulgence.

Dont Just Talk: At least US$3.5 billion was stolen from the Malaysian people, said US AG Loretta Lynch.

'Stolen' is a very strong word and out of courtesy to the people of Malaysia, the DOJ used 'Malaysian Official 1' to represent the person who played a central role in directing 1MDB's activities, which led to the disappearance of US$3.5 billion.

Behsaikong: It's a case of two AGs: One AG declared that there is no case to answer and everything remains an official secret. The other, the attorney-general of the US, no less, said that there is a case to answer and very much so.

I am fiercely patriotic and would rather that our own domestic affairs be settled internally. But since our own people can't, or won't do the necessary in this matter, but are in perpetual denial, then better if others outside our borders do the necessary for us (of course, involving something committed on their soil).

Be it external or internal, it involved Malaysia's money. So let the trials begin.

Anonymous 568201438363345: 1MDB and the BN government say nothing is missing. No fraud, no cheating, no nothing.

Once the money is recovered by the DOJ and handed back to 1MDB, should they accept it, or should they still continue to deny that no money is missing?

Existential Turd: US$3.5 billion is about RM14 billion. With an estimated Malaysian population of 30 million, each of us has been defrauded of nearly RM500.

If not for this and many other scandals, BR1M (Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia) would not have been necessary.

Negarawan: The US and European Union countries should also impose travel sanctions on the perpetrators behind 1MDB and their close associates.

As reported by the US AG, the 1MDB mega scandal is the biggest corruption case in US’ history, and perhaps in world’s history.

Anonymous_1414479449: I cry for Malaysia, what say you MCA, MIC, Gerakan and other BN component parties?

Whatsup: The truth from US is out, although over here, it's been out for a long time.

Yet we still can't comprehend the level of greed, corruption, immorality and treason in these people, and worse, all those still shamelessly protecting him?

Shame on them. It’s an utter disgrace.

Frank: Dear John Malott, I have been waiting to hear from you for some time.

Now, there is more that needs to be done as far as cases involving other entities and individuals, leading to Malaysia being a country where its great wealth is unfairly distributed, due mainly to fraud perpetrated by the elite.

Please help us to make it right. If not, the elites will think that the US' interest and actions in 1MDB are just aberrations, and soon it will be business as usual, consequently leading to losses, monetary and non-monetary, for Malaysia and countries such as yours.

Myop10: Much has been said about this 1MDB case for a long time now. A sense of hopelessness and abandonment has definitely fallen on many of us here in Malaysia.

While I wonder why it is only a civil proceeding they are taking against 1MDB, nonetheless, the DOJ has elevated its country in my eyes today. God bless America, indeed.

Oscar Kilo: No matter what your dislikes, misgivings and prejudices of the US are, you cannot deny that the US, despite its weaknesses and hypocrisy, is at least still a bastion of justice, rule of law and fundamental human rights.
