'Foreigners meddling in 1MDB'; Selangor 'palace politics'; MO1 times 36

Here are some of the key headlines from yesterday that you may have missed, in brief.

Hadi echoes Shahrizat's 'foreigners meddling in 1MDB' call

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang echoed Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil in saying that the 1MDB case should be probed and judged transparently by Malaysian authorities.

Hadi cautioned against foreign intervention over the matter after the United States Department of Justice filed lawsuits to seize assets linked to 1MDB that were allegedly siphoned to the US, Mingguan Malaysia reported.

However, Shahrizat was blasted by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla, who said Malaysians will not fall for the foreign intervention claim.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the government should apply for intervenor status in the lawsuits, because it has a stake through government-owned firm 1MDB.

Malaysian Official 1 mentioned 36 times in US DOJ lawsuit

While Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is not explicitly named in the DOJ lawsuit, descriptions of the 'Malaysian Official 1' in the suit have put all eyes on him.

The lawsuit mentions 'Malaysian Official 1' 36 times, describing the official as a Malaysian public official who had authority in 1MDB, and is a relative of Najib's stepson Riza Aziz.

The lawsuit also alleges that US$731 million was funnelled from 1MDB into a bank account belonging to 'Malaysian Official 1', via various companies.

However, Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali wants the DOJ to clarify on this because he said 'Malaysian Official 1' could be anyone.

'Palace politics' poser in Selangor

Amanah Selangor deputy chief Saari Sungib wants Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali to clarify if he is maintaining PAS in the state government to pander to palace demands that the state government has a Malay majority.

PKR, Amanah and DAP can form a government with 29 elected representatives, but this would consist of only 12 Malay representatives instead of 25 if PAS is in government.

When met, Azmin said he cannot comment on the matter immediately.

Other Kinibites

Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang urges Bersih to hold its anti-Najib rally in a stadium instead of on the streets so as to not cause disruption.

Senior lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan said while the lawsuit filed by the DOJ is a civil forfeiture action, the action is still based on criminal matters as it cites matters such as fraud.

Looking ahead

All eyes are on Penang, as Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said there might be an announcement today on a likely snap state election. He is to hold a townhall meeting on Penang's future in George Town tonight.

The Official Secrets Act trial against PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli resumes in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.

The ongoing police investigation into 1MDB is expected to be a hot topic at the Commercial Crimes Investigation Department's press conference on its successes today.
