Azmin's Twitter salvo; PKR's reliability; DOJ bringeth truth?

Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

Azmin fires Twitter salvo against Amanah rep

Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali fires an uncharacteristic salvo against Parti Amanah Negara's Hulu Kelang assemblyperson Saari Sungib, asking Saari if he is begging for a spot on the state executive council (exco).

The attack on Twitter came after Saari asked Azmin to clarify if he is keeping PAS in the exco, despite the dissolution of Pakatan Rakyat, to pander to palace expectations of a Malay majority among elected representatives in government.

Azmin said the coalition government made up of PAS, PKR and DAP was chosen by the people and should be respected.

DAP throws shade on PKR's reliability as coalition partner

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said DAP will ensure consensus among Pakatan Harapan and will not act unilaterally by calling for a snap election in Penang.

The CM said this is despite some quarters pointing out that PKR had acted unilaterally in the Permatang Pauh, Penanti and Kajang by-elections.

However, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said it is an inaccurate comparison as a snap election in Penang would affect 40 seats and other parties, and the circumstances of the by-elections were different. DAP also backed the Kajang polls, he said.

DAP publicity chief Tony Pua said it will give the electorate a say in the "political victimisation" of the Penang CM, who is charged with corruption over a bungalow purchase last month.

Umno Youth, PM say truth will surface in DOJ lawsuits

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the allegations in the United States Department of Justice lawsuits, to seize assets linked to 1MDB in an anti-kleptocracy action, are not proven in court.

Khairy said the Youth wing also backs Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's call for those named in the lawsuit, including Najib's stepson Riza Aziz and family friend and businessman Jho Low, to clear their names.

Najib also said the truth would surface in the DOJ lawsuits and noted that 1MDB had contributed significantly to welfare programmes.

Khairy said the local authorities should investigate criminal elements alleged in the DOJ lawsuits, if proven true, but inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the police would not get involved as it is a civil matter.

Meanwhile, Singapore is to boost its controls on money laundering following the 1MDB case, which it said has dented its reputation.

The South China Morning Post reported that Umno is shaken by the DOJ lawsuits, but Khairy denies this, saying no one has said they are leaving the party because of it as it is understood the allegations are yet to be proven in court.

Other Kinibites

Auditor-general Ambrin Buang testified that he classified his department's audit on 1MDB as confidential under the Official Secrets Act, but it is up to the Public Accounts Committee to table it in Parliament. He was testifying in the OSA case against PKR veep Rafizi Ramli.

The IGP said Bersih would not be allowed to hold its protest rally if it was meant to topple Najib, as this is not the lawful way to ask a prime minister to step down.

(will not be allowed)

An aide to the prime minister confirmed the family fued between Najib's stepdaughter Azrene Aziz and her brother Riza and their mother Rosmah Mansor, but said the PM's office will not comment further. Azrene penned a scathing comment on her estranged brother and mother following the DOJ lawsuits.

The DOJ lawsuits name four people but make references to several others without naming them. Malaysiakini joins the dots to identify the 1MDB and government officials referred to in the lawsuits.

Pro-Umno website MyKMU.net rubbishes rumours that the Najib has sent an emissary to the United States to offer a RM2 billion donation to the Hillary Clinton presidential election campaign, to avoid action against Najib if she is elected president.
