As Selena Gomez thrilled thousands of fans in Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam, last night, some 20 members of an Islamic group performed solat hajat (special prayers) and recited Yasin just outside her concert premises.

Pertubuhan Kebajikan Darul Islah Malaysia (Perkid) president Masridi Sat (photo) told Malaysiakini last night that they did this to prevent the concert from triggering any disasters.

"Kelantan has been flooded, Aceh was hit with earthquakes. Any time, something could happen to us.

"If disaster strikes, it doesn't matter whether someone is religious or not, it will affect everyone," he said.

He said they had also gathered there to monitor the situation, adding that they were disappointed many of Selena's young fans came dressed in 'sexy' clothing.

He also questioned where the concert-goers held their Maghrib and Isyak prayers - two of the five daily obligatory Muslim prayers that must be performed after sunset.

"We want to see whether the audience and the artiste follow the rules set by the authorities or not," he said.

Selena, who gained fame as a child celebrity through the television series Barney & Friends, held her concert at Stadium Malawati last night, despite facing resistance from certain quarters.

Previously, Selena, who is 24 and hails from Texas, US, held a concert in Indonesia, which is part of her concert tour called 'Revival Tour'.

A Selangor exco from PAS was reported to have directed mosques within the state to have solat hajat last Friday to pray for the concert to be cancelled.

However, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) had denied that they gave such instructions.

Masridi said Perkid had earlier sent a memorandum to the Selangor exco, Shah Alam mayor and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council chairperson in protest of the concert.

They said they were made to understand that the concert was allowed to continue because it was approved by the Shah Alam city council and the state government.

"We are here because we feel duty bound, we speak because it's true and not because of political interests," he said.

Meanwhile, the concert went on smoothly and there were no untoward incidents.

Selena, described as a "sex symbol" by US media, is said to have performed last night's concert in conservative clothing.

This prompted several netizens to say Selena was dressed more conservatively than some Malaysian artistes.
