'BN cannot wrest Kelantan from PAS in snap polls'

BN still has a long way to go before it can wrest Kelantan from PAS, said Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali, as he weighed in on a proposal to hold a snap election in the state.

Ibrahim said the idea, mooted by Kelantan Umno deputy chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub, was "most hilarious and mischievous", and not befitting the party's capabilities.

"Umno/BN has a long way to go to defeat PAS Kelantan. It's like the saying 'orang kayuh basikal untuk datang ke Kuala Lumpur' (cycling to Kuala Lumpur).

"It's better that the person who made the suggestion for snap polls examine the situation thoroughly first before saying anything, so that he is not seen as lusting for power," Ibrahim said in a statement today.

The former Pasir Mas MP speculated that Kelantan Umno had suggested the snap polls because Amanah, a PAS splinter group, could split the votes in Kelantan.

"If this is how they (Umno/BN) calculated it, then arithmetically, this answer would get an F,"  said Ibrahim.

Amanah's existence would not threaten Kelantan PAS, he said, adding that the situation in the east coast state was different from Selangor and Perak.

He warned BN not to assume that their victories in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections on June 18 signal support for BN throughout the country.

"Even when BN was strong and won throughout the country, PAS still won in Kelantan. Have you forgotten history? What more now with the issues of GST, 1MDB and others," Ibrahim said.

The people of Kelantan vote based on national politics as there are hundreds of thousands of Kelantan people living in Klang Valley now, he said.

Kelantan Umno loses each time people return to the state to vote, regardless how much aid it gives them, he said.

He added that the people of Kelantan admire the PAS representatives' way of life.

Kelantan Umno lucky in GE13

Ibrahim said Umno had been lucky in the last general election because it was up against PKR candidates in Ketereh, Machang and Tanah Merah in Kelantan.

"If they (Umno) were to go up against the moon (PAS' logo), I think it might not be so certain," he said.

He said Umno won Jeli because the number of voters there was quite small and an army camp is based there.

Meanwhile, Umno only won Gua Musang because Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is influential there, having served the constituency for decades, said Ibrahim.

Even then, it was not an easy win, he added.

"Other than that, is the BN machinery ready to fight, or do they just want to follow their lust which lacks energy," he asked.

Yesterday, Ahmad Jazlan said that infighting among Kelantan PAS leaders had eroded public confidence in the Islamist party.

He then suggested that snap polls be held because "a responsible party should restore the public's confidence".

His suggestion for snap polls comes after DAP expressed its desire to hold snap polls in Penang to serve as a referendum on its secretary-general and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, with regard to his corruption charges.

The Kelantan state government has been led by PAS since 1990. Before that, it had also ruled Kelantan for 18 years from 1959 to 1977.

BN has only ruled the state for about 12 years in between those two periods.
