Poser on new MACC No 1; All's well, says Najib; Muhyiddin joins PKR tour

Here are some of the key headlines from yesterday that you may have missed, in brief.

Poser over new MACC No 1

Dzulkifli Ahmad's appointment as the new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief seems worrying to some in civil society, given his role in clearing Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of all wrongdoing in relation to 1MDB and the case of the mysterious donations.

They posit that outgoing MACC deputy commissioner (prevention) Mustafar Ali should have been promoted to the anti-graft body's vacant chief commissioner post rather than be transferred out to the Immigration Department.

Law expert Abdul Aziz Bari asked if recent movements in the civil service were done according to norms and accepted practices, including Dzulkifli's appointment, which he said is questionable considering he was not quite senior even in his old posting in the Attorney-General's Chambers.

All is well says Najib

"There's nothing, all's usual," says Najib as he insisted that he will go on carrying out his duties as the nation's number one elected official despite challenges and pressures from within and outside the country over 1MDB.

DAP parliamentarian Tony Pua asked if the DOJ exposé that resulted in Deloitte Malaysia finally telling 1MDB that it no longer stands by the March 2013 and 2014 financial statements it signed off on 28 March 2014 and 5 Nov 2014 respectively, will lead to audit firm KPMG also denouncing its audit of the sovereign fund.

Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs Group Inc has reportedly been subpoenaed by United States authorities for it to disclose documents related to dealings with 1MDB.

And Singapore’s central bank also said that it is examining the extent of the involvement of the local Goldman Sachs’ unit in bond deals for 1MDB, as part of investigations into possible money laundering in the city state linked to the Malaysian sovereign fund.

Muhyiddin joins PKR on tour

Former Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin has joined forces with PKR to embark on a nationwide roadshow to explain the 1MDB scandal in simpler terms to the public.

Though when asked if he is looking at taking over as opposition leader, Muhyiddin pointed to PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who was sitting beside him, and said, "She is the opposition leader."

But Muhyiddin stopped short of saying "yes" to supporting efforts calling for the release of jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, though he stressed that he sympathised with the PKR de facto leader and was concerned for his well-being.

More Kini bites

Chief justice Arifin Zakaria wants the attorney-general (AG) to be relieved from heading the judicial division of the Magistrate and Sessions Court, to ensure unbiased judgment and verdicts in both courts.

Wishing her best to the outgoing MACC top guns, Bersih chief Maria Chin Abdullah expressed shock that certain quarters are against their efforts to fight corruption in the nation.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has distanced himself from the police report lodged by his deputy, Khairul Azwan Harun, over an alleged plot to topple PM Najib involving three tan sris.

Looking ahead

This morning former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad holds a meet and greet at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya, organised by his fan club Kelab Chedet.
