Police will facilitate the planned Bersih 5 rally if the electoral reform group follows the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA).

"I advise them (Bersih 5 organisers) to follow procedures and abide by rules and regulations as stipulated under the PAA.

"PAA provides for peaceful rallies, and police will facilitate all peaceful assemblies.

"If they follow the law, we will give them our support," inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.

Bersih today announced that it would be holding its fifth rally soon, although a date has yet to be specified.

Group chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said the protest seeks to push for further action on the 1MDB case, following the US Department of Justice's exposé that more than US$3.5 billion of the fund's monies had allegedly been misappropriated.

Khalid previously said that the protest would not be allowed to proceed if it seeks to topple Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

However, he assured that the National Security Act (NSC) would not be used against the rally.

The last Bersih protest in August last year was the first in its history to not end with a police crackdown.

This led to a counter protest by a pro-Umno group, dubbed the 'red shirts', last September.

The red shirts' leader, Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos, has vowed to hold a second protest to challenge Bersih 5 on the streets.
