Following DOJ seizures, will Ambrin and PAC follow Deloitte's example?

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Sing today asked if auditor-general Ambrin Buang and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) were prepared to follow Deloitte's example in promptly responding to the new facts revealed in the US Department of Justice's (DOJ) investigation into 1MDB.

Deloitte disavowed its audited accounts for 1MDB for the years 2013 and 2014 after the DOJ revealed details of how US$3.5 billion from the fund was stolen and announced move to seize US$1 billion in assets acquired using the stolen funds.

"Deloitte said that the information about the 1MDB multi-billion ringgit embezzlement, misappropriation, money-laundering and corruption contained in the DOJ complaint would have impacted on the Deloitte’s audited reports for 1MDB.

"The same question must now be asked as to how the DOJ complaint and information would have impacted on the auditor-general’s and the PAC reports on 1MDB, and whether both the auditor-general and the PAC will re-open investigations into 1MDB, by seeking for the information stated in the DOJ complaint from the US authorities," said Lim in a statement today.

Lim contrasted Deloitte's reaction to Putrajaya's apparent indifference to the DOJ action.

"The Deloitte disavowal is a major blow to the Malaysian government stance to basically ignore the DOJ complaint and to adopt a 'wait-and-see' attitude until the outcome of the DOJ suits, expecting it to take years," he said.

He was referring to Finance Minister Johari Abdul Gani who on Monday said the disavowal by Deloitte had no impact on 1MDB.

Lim also highlighted that the 136-page complaint by the DOJ contained a sworn verification despite attempts to downplay its damning contents which include claims that a Malaysian government leader, referred to as 'Malaysian Official 1', received US$731 million of the stolen funds.

"The auditor-general and the PAC should re-open investigations into 1MDB and ask the US authorities for information relating to the 136-page DOJ complaint on the multi-billion dollar 1MDB global embezzlement, misappropriation, money-laundering and corruption which have far-reaching impact on their reports on 1MDB," he said.
