Terengganu PAS wants beleaguered Umno state assemblypersons Ahmad Said and Ghazali Taib to make a swift decision on whether the two want to quit Umno.

State PAS commissioner Satiful Bahari Mamat, who is also the Paka assemblyperson, said the sultan of Terengganu can only decide if the present opposition holds the majority once the duo leave Umno.

“The ball is in Ahmad's court. Ahmad and Ajil (Ghazali) were reported to have said they want to leave. They must make a decision soon,” he told Malaysiakini.

“What is important is Ahmad Said leaves the party, no point in ‘pom-pang’, ‘pom-pang’ (just going back and forth) and allow this issue to drag and affect the people,” he added.

Ahmad, the former Terengganu menteri besar and currently the Kijal assemblyperson, reportedly threatened to quit Umno last night and join forces with PAS.

Meanwhile, Ghazali, who is the Ajil assemblyperson, has criticised the state's administration under Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, but maintained that he will not leave the party.

At present, with Ahmad and Ghazali in Umno, the party has 17 seats while PAS has 14 and PKR 1 in the state legislative assembly.

Satiful recalled that during the last state legislative assembly sitting, speaker Mohd Zubir Embong rejected Ahmad's motion of no confidence as he failed to give a 14-day notice.

“The coming state assembly seating is on Aug 18, for one day, and till today there is no motion tabled by both of them or anyone of a non-confidence vote against the present menteri besar,” said Satiful.

Prepared to govern Terengganu

Satiful maintained that PAS along with PKR are prepared to govern Terengganu should the two quit Umno.

“But this can only happen when Ahmad leaves Umno and the Terengganu Sultan will decide who commands the majority in the legislature.

“If this happens, the Terengganu palace is expected to summon us (to determine) who has the majority. When they leave, the Terengganu BN will be in a minority government,” he said.

He said snap polls may not be the best solution as it would result in more money being spent.

When asked if Ahmad would be part of the exco line-up with PAS should he form an alliance with PAS, Satiful said “it depends”.

But he acknowledged Ahmad's vast experience, saying it would be very useful.

The Star reported today that Ahmad had issued an ultimatum to Ahmad Razif to resign, after the menteri besar blamed him for the state's present turmoil.

"I have a lot of secrets. Don't make me open my mouth. He (Ahmad Razif) speaks about my performance and that because of me, the state government lost most of the seats during the election and only had a narrow win.

“He needs to know that during a time when there was a coup to oust me, BN was almost certain of going down by losing to PAS, he knows who saved and gave victory," Ahmad was quoted as saying.

Previously, Ahmad also complained that despite being from Umno, the allocation to his constituency had been with held by Ahmad Razif.

The former menteri besar also threatened the Umno supreme council to sack him but warned that the result of the action would be a hung assembly.
